Of all the texts that we've read this year, which one is your favorite, and why? Which one is your least favorite, and why?
Out of all the books we have read this school year my favorite has been The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas. It was the first formal book this year but as I reflect back on what we have read I was able to enjoy that book the most. I have always had a hard time reading about slavery and I just always feel so horrified knowing what used to and in someways still exist in our society. I found The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas to be very informational and also inspirational in a way because he was able to never give up even when put in very very difficult situations. My least favorite book this school year was The Merchant of Venice. I found the book very hard to read mostly because of the language that Shakespeare's plays are written in. I also didn't find the story very compelling. I did like how we learned about how much Shakespeare's writing has influenced today's writing and learning basic structures of a play. I would probably enjoy The Merchant of Venice more now because after taking Theatre I learned a lot about how to read Shakespeare.

I relate to having The Merchant of Venice be my least favorite as well. Although, if you read it again now would your least favorite be the same? Also how did theater help you figure out Shakespeare better?
ReplyDeleteThe Merchant of Venice wasn't my least favorite but definitely not my favorite, so in agreement there. I really liked Fredrick Douglass as well, I thought it was an amazing book.
ReplyDeleteThe Merchant of Venice wasn't very compelling to me either, so it certainly wasn't my favorite in any regard (in fact, like you, it is my least). However, I am reluctant to put Frederick Douglass so high on my personal favorites list. In my opinion, it was an interesting memoir, but that's what it was: a memoir. I prefer reads with more vivid imagery.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that the merchant of Venice was not my favorite book at all the books we read this year, but I dislike it more because I did not like the style as much as the other books we read this year.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about how it was harder to read Shakespeare then, and now it is easier because of theater class. I had to read the Shakespearean Poetry earlier in the year, so that was really hard then, but I think it might be easier now.
ReplyDeleteThe Merchamt of Venice was also my least favorite. Reading Frederick Douglas was hard to read just to hear about all of the things that happened before we were alive. But it was a good book.
ReplyDeleteThe merchant of Venice was not my least favorite, but not my favorite. I can relate to some of your reasons as to why it isn't your favorite, but some of your reasons don't make sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI really found the Narrative of the life of Frederick really fascinating, and it gave me more perspective on slavery.
ReplyDeleteJdskd it seems nobody actually liked merchant of venice and i didn't like it either. The play last year was a lot more fun in my opinion
ReplyDeleteI agree, the Narrative was wonderful. It was a close second for me this year, but The Great Gatsby narrowly beat it out for me.
